Frederick Heid's #WhenYouKnow Story

“It made me realize that if I had that level of concern and if I felt that isolated, I really should do more, because I’m not alone in this.”

When leaders speak up, stigma loses its grip.

In this powerful and deeply personal story, Superintendent Heid shares what it was like to quietly struggle under the weight of leadership, loss, and expectation—and the fear that came with simply asking for help.

From worrying about being recognized, to hesitating outside a mental health clinic, his experience shines a light on a reality many people face but rarely talk about: the stigma around behavioral and mental health doesn’t disappear with success, title, or responsibility.

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) available to Polk County Public Schools employees is a confidential, no-cost resource designed to support the whole person, not just mental or behavioral health. This program offers access to counseling, family support, financial guidance, medical advocacy, and other life resources during challenging seasons. Too often, these services go unused simply because people don’t fully understand what’s available or hesitate to ask. The EAP exists to help employees navigate real-life pressures with dignity, privacy, and care, so they can feel supported, valued, and equipped both in their personal lives and while supporting our students.
